Formal Wedding Officiant Services Indiana
Welcome to your Wedding!
It is what I say to every couple when they meet me together at the end of the aisle. It's your wedding day! It's a big deal! A lot has lead up to this moment when you are about to say "I do." After the time you've spent growing as couple and building your relationship, you are now ready for the next big step. You are getting married!!! It's exciting!
As your Wedding Officiant I want you to be in the moment. I want you to take a moment to feel everything you are feeling. How it feels when you first see each other, the electricity you feel when you take each other's hands. At that point, you usually get lost in each other and stop paying any attention to me... And that's OK! I will make sure you are paying attention to all the good stuff!
The way you feel on your wedding day is a big deal! No matter what may have happened leading up to your ceremony, you have made it down the aisle and now, your wedding truly begins. You are surrounded by family and friends.
Maybe ten of your best friends that make up your wedding party and then another hundred family members and friends have gathered to watch, to hope with you, and to celebrate with you.
Or maybe you are just surrounded by a small, intimate group of those who you hold most dear, because a big wedding just isn't for you.
Maybe your wedding day is going to be just the two of you. Whatever the situation, I want you to be as comfortable as you possibly can be. And, well, overflowing with love!
Wedding ceremonies have come a long way. You no longer have to spend an hour in a church, bored with the same old church service over and over again. Weddings held outside of a church generally last no more than 30 minutes. That includes your procession down the aisle and your grand recessional as a married couple. In the middle, you laugh a little, cry a little, smile a lot, and maybe pray a prayer or two-or not.
You can write and share your own vows, perform family unity ceremonies or make the Unbreakable Vow in true Harry Potter style. Barefoot brides and monogrammed kicks are welcome! Get married in front of the grandest backdrop or under the traditional Chuppah. Maybe the 150 year old tree on your family's property is the only backdrop you've ever dreamed of for your wedding. Your wedding can happen anywhere, from a room with a fabulous view of Indy to your backyard. The spot you had your first kiss or the spot you got engaged.
I've been performing wedding ceremonies for nine years. My goal when I became a wedding officiant was, and still is, to help you have any type of ceremony you want. No judgement, just acceptance.
Most of my wedding ceremonies are completely non-religious, but couples often seek my services when they are looking for someone to perform an interfaith ceremony or a slightly religious ceremony to please and honor their faithful family members. Secular Humanists, spiritually minded, Christians without a regular pastor, all are welcome here. LGBTQ welcome. Absolutely no judgement! One of my specialties is creating a wedding ceremony that will make everyone happy.
Last season, we had a beer ceremony. Yes, some of the best advice I've given at the end of a wedding ceremony was, "If all else fails, pop a top and drink a beer!"
Other couples choose the Cord of Three Strands or the Marriage Unity Cross. Every season I perform at least one Pagan handfasting and many secular handfastings. We can create something special, just for you.
What type of wedding officiant service do you need?
Over the years I've learned that one type of wedding officiant service does not fit all. As much as I might talk about personalizing your ceremony just for you, you might not want or need that. As deep as it can be, it may just not be that deep for you. And that is OK!! It's more than OK! You might just want someone to come and officiate your wedding, perform a nice wedding ceremony, sign the marriage license and leave. I have got you covered! You can even book online, we'll exchange a few emails and I'll come and marry you and take your marriage license back downtown so you don't have to. I'll even send you certified copies of your marriage license.
Are you stressed and nervous as the center of attention? Do you or your family have special needs that need accomodation?
I'm the mother of two boys with autism. I've learned a lot about the reality of social anxiety and want to help you through it on your wedding day. When you just think about a wedding ceremony it may be overwhelming. I will take the time to break it all down and walk you through it so it's manageable. I will be standing right there in front of you every step of the way. No one has to know.
Maybe you have family member that might just be their natural selves during your wedding ceremony? You are OK with that, but it may not seem quite proper at such an occasion? No worries! Everyone is welcome at your wedding. It could be your autistic ring bearer, your special needs friend or relative in a wheelchair that really can't control what they say or do, or it could just be a drunk uncle. We will take it all in stride.
More Specific Details Please...
There are actually some very specific services I offer as a wedding officiant. You may need or want all of it. For a formal wedding ceremony there is:
If you are having a large formal wedding ceremony with a large bridal party I recommend booking the entire package because you actually need it all. If you are spending thousands and thousands of dollars on your wedding, you want to make sure everything goes off perfectly. No matter what happens, you want a seasoned professional that can handle any situation. When you book the entire package you get much more comprehensive services.
The wedding ceremony package includes:
A customized wedding ceremony!
We will do whatever it takes to make your wedding ceremony your own. This can be as simple or as personal as you like. Some people like traditional christian ceremonies and others want to personalize their ceremony with creative unity ceremonies and readings with humor and personality. Secular Humanist and handfastings ceremonies are also popular.
This package includes two in-person meetings. Usually one when you book and another closer to your wedding to just confirm the details. You don’t have to have in-person meetings. I work with many couples from a distance. I utilize google docs so we can all be on the same phone call in two different places looking at and editing the same document at the same time.
So, What does a "Customized Wedding Ceremony" Mean?
Great question! Do I just have a few wedding ceremonies, pick one, insert your names and add your unity ceremony? Well, yes and no.
I've put a lot of thought and work into customizing ceremonies. I've taken into consideration your time and mine and what my experience has taught me.
We will sit down and discuss your wedding. What you want your ceremony to be and what you don't want it to be. We will discuss your family dynamics and what your family's expectations might be and how you would like to address them. We will consider the tone of your ceremony. The venue, your wedding party and any special needs you might have. If you are going to be partying before your ceremony, you might want to keep it light. I'm fine with couples who have been drinking and might be a little, or a lot, tipsy during the ceremony. You just might not want to choose a religious ceremony or try to pour sand into a small vase! If your family is religious, we'll respect that. If you are closet atheists and your family are devout Christians, we will find a happy medium.
Once I have an idea of what you want in a ceremony, I'll go through my ceremonies and choose some options I think will fit you well. Then we'll go on from there, moving in the direction of what you love!
It's All About The Ceremony!
When I first started officiating weddings I would create a wedding ceremony for each couple. Then it evolved. Once I had a few great ceremonies I'd show them to couples and use them as a starting point to customize from there. It helps to see the bones of a wedding ceremony first and then customize.
Over time, I found couples choosing the same ceremonies over and over again. You can read those ceremonies here. I have a traditional wedding ceremony that breaks down each part of the wedding and I include links to more options for each part. I used to have all of my options on my computer, then I decided to put them on a separate website for everyone to use. It includes many prewritten ceremonies of all kinds, christian, non-religious, simple, civil, and more. Unity ceremony options, options for readings, Disney quotes, Harry Potter etc... You can view my wedding ceremony website here.
We will also go through the rehearsal line up and options for the physical structure of your ceremony. Not every venue is the same and not every wedding party or family is the same. Some venue's are small so your wedding party will sit in the front rows. Where will everyone stand if you have a wedding party of 20?
A formal wedding weekend usually kicks off with the rehearsal. This package includes me creating time in my schedule until you know when your rehearsal will be. Some venue’s already know they are booked the night before your wedding and that your rehearsal will be at 11 am or Thursday night. Others might be available the night before when you book your venue but if they do book that day with another event your rehearsal time will change. It may be Friday night, it may be Wednesday night, or it may be Friday morning. I will block out four hours in my schedule for every possible time so I don’t get booked with other appointments. I will arrive 30 minutes early for your rehearsal and you will have one hour to rehearse.
Sometimes, the rehearsal is an easy 20 minute affair. Other times, it an hour, or more, Your photographer might be there making sure they are set up to capture every shot. You might want to time your entrance with the music so you walk down the aisle at precisely the right moment. Whatever it takes.
The rehearsal can really put your and everyone’s minds at ease going into your wedding day. Everyone’s met each other, they've met me, we all know what we’re going to do on your wedding day and everyone feels confident. There is a lot of value in that. You will wake up on your wedding day ready to be pampered and spend one of the most amazing days of your life with family and friends knowing your ceremony is under control.
Your Wedding Day!
Everything has lead up to this day! The meetings, the tastings, the fittings, the choices, the planning, the rehearsals. It's time! It's your wedding day and you are getting married!!
The day of your wedding I will arrive one hour early.
I will go through everything we discussed at the rehearsal to make sure everything is in place like the right tables for your unity ceremony, make sure there’s a lighter for the unity candle, and things like that.
I’ll meet with your DJ or musicians to go over any ques.
I’ll get set up with the microphone and do a sound check.
I will find the two of you and say hello and go over any last minute details. Don't worry, if there aren't any, I won't bother you.
We'll sign the marriage license. I will get your marriage license from you, if we didn’t already do that at your rehearsal, and we’ll sign it. I find this is easier to sign the license before the ceremony because you will be busy afterwards. It’s just the process of signing the legal marriage document that we will return to the clerk. If you do prefer to sign after, that’s fine. Just let me know. If you aren’t seeing each other before the ceremony, no problem, I will find each of you separately and usually a photographer will come with me.
Then...YOU GET MARRIED!!!
You'll walk down the aisle, you'll take each other's hands and I'll say:
Welcome to your wedding.
I'll have you take a deep breath and be in the moment. It's a really BIG MOMENT!!
Usually, I try my best to keep your ceremony light-hearted. I want you to feel comfortable. I want your guests to feel engaged, and a little, or a lot, of humor, tastefully inserted can be a good thing. This last wedding season when I was preparing for a ceremony the string quartet arrived said Yeah! It’s the fun wedding officiant! And they meant it in a very good way.
I also understand not all wedding ceremonies are like that. We will discuss the tone of your ceremony and that is what I will deliver. Most people getting married outside of a church are not really looking for a solemn affair but there are many couples who hire me for Christian and multi-faith ceremonies and we observe all of those customs with the utmost respect.
I Now Pronounce You Married!!
Your first kiss! The snapping of pictures, Don't worry, we will set up the shot for the photography of that first kiss! And, you will recess down the aisle a married couple!!
Have a fabulous time at your party!!
After the Wedding Ceremony...
There is one last detail that need to be taken care of after your wedding ceremony. Your completed marriage license must be returned to the county clerk that issued it within 30 days.
I will be happy to file your marriage license for you. If your marriage license was issued in Hamilton or Marion county. I will file your completed marriage license, and obtain two certified copies and mail them to you. I can wait until you get back from your honeymoon to mail them. If you want your certified copies faster, you can always return the license yourself and get the certified copies in real time. If you live in an outlying county, I will give the license back to you to file within 30 days or I can send them for you by certified mail to make sure the clerk receives them.
If you have already been legally married, no problem. If you need to get legally married before your formal wedding day we can get together and sign the marriage license earlier. It’s a very common occurrence and we can keep it very discreet so it doesn’t take anything away from your formal wedding day ceremony and celebration.
Ahem, Sounds great but....
